The NKlJ trail's history

Klarälvsbanan (the Klarälven trail) was a railway line built in the late 1800s. It was a 180km long, narrow-gauge railway line which covered Skoghall in the south through Karlstad, Munkfors, Hagfors and Filipstad. The Uddeholm company at that time was the principal owner and they renamed the railway line as the NKlJ trail, Nordmark - Klarälven's Railways.

The rails remain between Uddeholm and Hagfors and at present the rails are only used for trolley rides. 

The NKlJ trail - a major transport route

The trail was used to transport raw materials and products to industries along the track. As the railway line was not used in the same manner by the mid-1800s it was gradually shut down.  The railway line was closed step by step as of the 50s and in the 80s the rails were removed from practically the entire track. Today there are only a few kilometres of track left.

At the Hagfors railway museum you will see carriages and locomotives which travelled on the NKlJ trail a long time ago.


Stjärnfors mill became Stjärnfors factory

The old factory area is in the centre of Hagfors municipality. This area constitutes the foundation of the Uddeholm company.  In 1668 the first dam was built in Stjärnsfors in order to utilise the hydropower in Uvån. Johan Karlström from Älvsbacka started the iron industry with two hammer mills and a blast furnace. The iron works movement was developed to a large industry by the patron Bengt Gustaf Geijer during the 1700s and covered a large number of factories in the district. Stjärnsfors factory was the focal point of the development of the Uddeholm company for approximately 200 years and when the modern Hagfors ironworks became operational in 1878 moved production there.

 

Iron was followed by paper

When the ironworks era came to an end a factory for paper pulp was built here instead. The industrial era was also completed in the mid-1950s and several buildings from the era remain. Stjärnfors mill at Uvån had been established for a long time prior to the iron works being built. The mill was hydro-powered until 1920 when the last power station was built. The current mill was in operation 1940-1956 and was restored to its original condition in 1996.  It is now a mill museum.

 

The Hagfors industrial and railway museum

You will see carriages and locomotives which travelled on the NKlJ trail on your visit to the Hagfors railway museum. There are several old steam locomotives, including NKlJ's first locomotive which was produced in England 1874. There you can also view one of the world's best preserved road locomotives, referred to as the "Steam horse" of 1862. You can also visit the old engine shed, which is now an environmental museum and shows the structure of a workshop on the railways in the past.
